A push-up game for Android
Flappy, the first of Flapfit's five games
Flappy is a free push-up game for Android phones. Each push-up flaps a bird through a gap in the pillars. The phone's front camera watches you and counts every full rep on the device, so there is nothing to wear, nothing to tap and no equipment.
How the camera counts a push-up
A pose model runs on the phone and finds your shoulders, elbows and hips in every frame. Go all the way down and the bird dives with you; push all the way back up and it climbs. That is one rep and one flap. Stop short at the bottom or the top and nothing happens, and the pillar keeps coming. A half rep does not count, so the score is a count of real push-ups.
How to set it up
- Stand the phone on the floor about a metre ahead of your hands, leaning back slightly so it sees you from head to knees.
- Get into a plank. The game checks it can see what it needs to judge, then counts you in.
- Push. A set lasts until the game beats you, usually a couple of minutes.
You need the floor space of a mat. No account, no sign-up and no questionnaire.
What it works
Chest, shoulders and arms, with a core that has to hold the plank the whole set.
Works offline, and the video stays on your phone
Pose detection runs on the phone, not on a server, so the game needs no signal and no live video is streamed anywhere. A set can be saved as a video on your phone; it leaves only if you share it. The privacy policy lists everything the app sends.
The other four games
The same camera counts four more movements: shoulder taps steer Swerve, squats duck the gates in Limbo, a wall sit holds back Avalanche, and high knees keep the pace in Pulse. See all five games.
What it costs, and which phones
The first game you finish is yours for one set a day, every day, for good. Flapfit Pro, which opens all five games, is not on sale yet. Flapfit runs on Android 7.0 or newer with a front camera; an iPhone version is coming soon.
